Lot Description
This seal features a rich, honey-yellow hue and a perfectly square form. The knob is carved in high relief as an adult lion playing with cubs around a ball; the adult lion exudes majestic vitality, while young lions frolic nearby. Embroidered balls and swirling cloud motifs are interwoven throughout, creating a full, compact composition. The carving style is robust and ancient, symbolizing imperial favor and enduring official rank across generations. All four sides of the seal body are finely finished. The top edge bears a geometric key-pattern border. Two sides feature incised seal-script inscriptions on the side panels, while the other two display shallow carvings of landscapes with geese and pine-crane motifs. The imagery and text complement each other, reflecting a strong scholarly aesthetic. The base remains flat and ready for inscription. With its intricate design combining auspicious beast knobs, poetic inscriptions, and delicate landscape and bird-and-flower carvings, this piece demonstrates exceptional craftsmanship. It seamlessly blends practical seal carving with decorative value for the scholar's desk, representing a quintessential masterpiece of traditional Chinese seal art.
