This coin is Kaiyuan Tongbao, first minted in the 4th year of Wude reign (621 A.D.) during the reign of Emperor Gaozu of Tang. It was the primary circulating square-hole copper coin throughout the Tang Dynasty. The inscription "Kaiyuan Tongbao" was written by Ouyang Xun, a renowned calligrapher of early Tang Dynasty. Its official clerical script established the naming convention of "Tongbao" coinage that influenced Chinese currency for over a thousand years, marking a milestone in Chinese numismatic history. An upward crescent symbol is cast at the top on the coin’s reverse, representing one of the most classic varieties of Kaiyuan Tongbao. Certified and encapsulated by GBCA (Gongbo Historical Coins Authentication), graded Extra Fine. Specifications: Diameter 25.0 mm, thickness 1.2 mm, weight 3.6 g. The coin is covered with natural aged patina. Characters remain distinct with well-defined shape and moderate circulation wear. Well-preserved, it serves as authentic physical relic reflecting the prosperous Tang Dynasty.
